Things might change as I continue my research, but these are the tools and methods I am thinking about so far. For my final project, I will develop it in StoryMaps because the platform is interactive for storytelling. I like how it displays information based on previous projects like Aaron’s and Gianna’s, so I think StoryMaps will be the most effective way to communicate my topic. I plan to use things like Sidecar elements in StoryMaps to share women chefs’ real-life testimonies and the mapping function to show restaurants owned by women head chefs currently in the United States.
In addition to StoryMaps, I will use Timeline JS to walk the reader through the history of women’s participation in the culinary field based on the book “Taking the Heat” by Deborah A. Harris and Patti Giuffre, as it has comprehensive information about what has happened since the 17th century up until the late 20th century.
Then, I will use Datawrapper to visualize the gender dynamics of MasterChef contestants and the winners of the James Beard Foundation Award. Right now, with Datawrapper, I can look at things like the count or percentage of gender by season and the NAICS code of the contestants’ occupations before competing in MasterChef.
I intend to share my mom’s interview via the audio component, writing down the transcript, and displaying her pictures. Finally, I want to use the Word Cloud tool in Voyant to visualize common misogynist and sexist phrases or words toward women cooks based on what is said in the MasterChef episodes, food reviews, and the real world.
