I put the corpus of the works of Charles Brockden Brown (1771-1810) into Voyant and looked at the frequency of unhighlighted honorifics. I wanted to look at this because this was my original research question and C.B.B is often proclaimed as the “Father of the American Novel” and so this sets a precedent for future authors to come. Notably, on the Voyant website, within the corpus of Jane Austin (1775-1817), one of the examples of visualization also shows the frequency of these unhighlighted honorifics. Showing that this style might’ve been part of a greater trend of the day.
I also looked at a bunch of maps this week and was baffled by how many and how different they were. The left map is from a German cartographer published in 1740 while the right map was made a Welsh surveyor first published in 1755 before being edited and republished in 1776. There’s many other maps of this same Eastern Coast throughout the 1700s by various other authors that I want to put into comparison. Both maps are lined with names of towns and populations of people, showing a concern for establishing settlement and population count, while the left one is more embellished with latin words and images on the bottom right as well as depictions of animals and civilization, the later map shows a move towards formality with lists of towns on the right.
